For years, our philosophy concerning the elaboration of wine has been kept intact, through the careful selection of the best vineyards and a natural process of ageing to offer you the finest wines.
Rioja since the XIX century (19th century)
More than 140 years after the founding of the first bodega, Bodegas Montecillo maintains its solid philosophy of respect towards the vineyard, the selection of the best grape, a coherent wine production, ageing in high quality oak barrels and refining in the tranquillity of its impressing cellars, where bottles lay that are dated back to 1926, the same year that Rioja received the indication of a protected ``Designation of Origin``.
Close linked to hundreds of vine growing families
We are actively committed to our natural, winemaking and human environment. Following this premise, Montecillo maintains relationships that go back decades with hundreds of vine growers in the area. This way of working and collaborating provides us, year after year, with the very best fruit from more than 800 parcels spread across the Rioja Alta.
Located right next to the vineyards and supported by the latest advances in geolocalization, we can control the healthy vegetative cycle of the vines, the different stages in the ripening process and the final quality of the fruit, among other factors. Our name, Montecillo - or little mountain - honours the origin of it all, the irregular topography of the Rioja vineyards. And it is here, in the vines, that our main efforts are concentrated.
Crafting & Ageing
Technology and know-how: the wine comes to life
From carefully selected vine stock, the new vintage starts with the arrival of the - mainly Tempranillo - grapes at the winery. With all the characteristics of maturity, acidity and flavour that make them exceptional, in order to, with the passage of time, produce wines for long ageing, emblematic of Montecillo throughout history.
The processes of vinification and ageing are controlled with the very latest systems. One of the key milestones in the winery's recent history was the incorporation in 2005 of Ganimede® tanks, which give a more gentle, selective and effective extraction of the wine's aromatic compounds. Another major factor is the constant renovation of barrel stock, with more than 20,000 French and American oak barrels currently in the cellar.
Time becomes legend in the deepest part of the cellar
Time is to be treasured, silence, an ally, and patience, a jewel to be preserved. We are in the heart of the winery, in its deepest part: the impressive cellar. Here, surrounded by darkness, calm and mystery, the wines of Montecillo are laid down to achieve greatness. The passage of the years will convert them into Gran Reservas and they will be called forth to perpetuate the legend of our name.
But, at the moment, they continue to rest. And they slowly evolve within hundreds of thousands of bottles, piled up, curiously, by hand, one on top of the other, row after row. With unequalled precision and stability. The story goes that they could easily support the steps of a pair of dancers without any ill effects.
