For years, our philosophy concerning the elaboration of wine has been kept intact, through the careful selection of the best vineyards and a natural process of ageing to offer you the finest wines.

Rioja since the XIX century (19th century)

More than 140 years after the founding of the first bodega, Bodegas Montecillo maintains its solid philosophy of respect towards the vineyard, the selection of the best grape, a coherent wine production, ageing in high quality oak barrels and refining in the tranquillity of its impressing cellars, where bottles lay that are dated back to 1926, the same year that Rioja received the indication of a protected ``Designation of Origin``.

A long relationship with hundreds of wine-growing families

We have always been actively committed to our natural environment, winegrowing and people. Following this premise, Montecillo has kept a bond for decades with hundreds of vine growers in the region. This collaboration allows us to dispose of harvest after harvest of the best fruit from more than 800 parcels widespread over La Rioja Alta.

At the foot of the vineyards and with the complement*addition of the latest advances of the geolocation, we can control the vegetative cycle and health of the grapevines, the various states of the ripening process and final quality of the fruit, among other factors.

THE ELABORATION AND AGEING

Technology and expertise: the life of the wine starts

Rigorously selected from the vine, mostly the grapes of the Tempranillo variety enter in the winery to start making a new vintage. With all the characteristics of maturity, acidity and taste which make them exceptional, with the passing of time, we obtain long-aged wines, one of the greatest historic icons of Montecillo.

The winemaking and ageing processes are equipped with the newest systems. One of the essential milestones in recent history of the winery was the incorporation of Ganimede® tanks, which provide a more delicate, selective and efficient extraction of the aromatic components of the wine. Another decisive aspect is the constant renovation of the stock of barrels, which today consists of more than 20.000 French and American oak barrels.

Time and myth in the profound depths of the cellars

Time is a treasure, a silence, an ally, and patience a jewel to cherish. We are deep inside the bodega, in its impressive cellars. Here, immerged in darkness, quiet and mystery, the wines of Montecillo age and achieve their full greatness. Over the years, they will convert in ´grandes reservas´ and one day become the emblem that continues the legend around our brand.

But for the moment they are still asleep. And are slowly evolving in the hundreds of thousands of carefully hand stacked bottles, by hand, on top of each other, row upon row. With unequalled precision and firmness. Legend has it that they can easily support a dancing couple top without being damaged.
