Founded in 1870, our winery is the oldest in Fuenmayor, and the third oldest in Rioja.
More than 150 years of continuous production of authentic Rioja wines.
One of the first was our founder, Don Celestino Navajas Matute, born into a family with long-standing roots in Fuenmayor, who founded the winery in 1870 after inheriting some vineyards from his father-in-law.
Alejandro Navajas, trained in Bordeaux, France, managed the winery from 1896 alongside his brother Gregorio. They opted to use Bordeaux winemaking methods. And in the decade of the 1920s, Montecillo wines acquired national fame.
José Luis Navajas, the grandson of Celestino, headed up the winery thanks to his great training as a winemaker in Burgundy (France). He was key in improving the quality of our wines and introduced pioneering techniques to the region, such as cool fermentation.
As he had no direct descendants, José Luis entrusted the legacy of his ancestors to another family with centuries of viticultural experience: the Osborne family.
The Osborne family built upon the visionary spirit of our founders, constructing new facilities in Navarrete to ensure Bodegas Montecillo's international expansion.
With the arrival of a new century, we redefined our quality standards, introducing Ganímede® tanks and flextanks for our singular wines, along with geolocalization monitoring. This is in addition to the constant renewal of our barrels.
