In this new episode of Gourmet & Tips around Madrid, James Blick takes us to Chamberi, a typical Madrilenian neighbourhood which most cool blogs have featured thanks to its vintage stores and restaurants full of character. Surprisingly enough, one of its most famous streets has generated its own hashtag: #ponzaning.
LAMBUZO
Seafood, shrimps, prawns… a long list that leads to the jewel on the menu: the almadraba tuna typical of Cadiz, an exquisite product that not many people have been lucky enough to taste. Lambuzo has already two restaurants in the capital and far beyond just eating, this place has recovered the concept of an “abacería” (a place where you can buy special products but also eat them in situ: you can taste products from Cadiz and also buy chickpeas from Chiclana and olive oil to bring back home. An irresistible piece of Andalucía in Ponzano St 8 which is nowadays one the most emblematic family-owned restaurant.
TABERNA AVERÍAS
In the street dedicated to gastronomy in the neighbourhood of Chamberi, Ponzano, you´ll find this tavern with more than 400 wine references. In addition, this is a paradise for wine-lovers as you can order almost any wine by glass. Tasting long ageing wines is possible thanks to the Coravin system, which uses a needle to push through the wine cork and pour it without tacking it out.
You shouldn´t miss the beef- chuck stew or the vegetables escalibada with cod but this time James chose the steak tartar so he could pair it with a Montecillo Gran Reserva Selección Especial of 2001.
ASTURIANOS
In Vallehermoso St 94 we find a historic spot in the neighbourhood of Chamberi: Asturianos. This restaurant has been serving homemade traditional food for more than 100 years that could easily compete with your mother´s best recipes. Julia, the cook, has been more than 50 years in the kitchen trying to take the best care of her clients. Whether you choose reindeer carpaccio, fabada or monkfish with caviar, your stomach will be satisfied and if not, ask James Blick about when he tried the beans with seafood and a Montecillo Crianza.
