Variety

88% Tempranillo – 12% Garnacha

Thanks to rigorous controls and exhaustive treatments to our vineyards to combat possible outbreaks of disease or pests, the grapes ripened correctly with a balanced production. This resulted in healthy grapes, with a good level of acidity and fresh fruit aromas.

This Crianza wine is the fruit of Tempranillo grapes that come in their entirety from vineyards in the Rioja Alta, located in towns with a long winemaking tradition: Fuenmayor, Cenicero, Baños de Ebro, Sajazarra, Cuzcurrita and Arenzana; and Garnacha picked in vineyards in Pradejón, in the Rioja Oriental area.

Testimonials

Lightly-dried red cherry with tobacco and toasted notes, light dill and dried herbs, and minor floral notes at the edges. Well-fruited and zesty on the palate, some light grated citrus notes of grapefruit alongside the red orchard fruits, great length and fine acidity.

Elaboration

1

The Tempranillo was vatted in Ganímede tanks. 5% of the must was bled-off and cold maceration took place over 2 to 3 days. Fermentation took place in a way that respected the fruit. Thanks to the Ganímede tanks, we were able to extract color and aromas, as well as smooth, ripe tannins.

2

After eleven days of skin contact (less than on other occasions so as to reduce the extraction of green notes), it was devatted using gravity and the wines underwent malolactic conversion in underground concrete tanks.

3

The Garnacha fermented in small truncated-cone steel tanks, at a controlled temperature with continuous pumping-over, with prior bleeding-off of 7% of the must.

Breeding

1

Tempranillo: aged for 18 months in American oak barrels of 1-3 years of age. The barrels have lightly toasted staves and medium-toasted heads, to give greater complexity.

2

Garnacha: Aged for 16 months in 1-3-year-old American oak barrels. These barrels are unusual in that the heads are untoasted to retain fresher fruit notes.

3

Once the final blend had been made, the wine was bottled and aged for a minimum of six months in complete calm before its release.

Color

Bright cherry red with bluish highlights. Intense in color.

Smells

Intense and complex. Red fruit aromas accompanied by sweet notes of patisserie. Hints of toffee and strawberry & cream candies appear.

Taste

Montecillo Crianza is appealing from the outset, with lots of the red fruit typical of Tempranillo, alongside balanced acidity and the body of Garnacha. Polished and well-integrated tannins appear alongside fruity notes. A long, pleasing wine that leaves a mark.
