Montecillo Gran Reserva 1981 Montecillo Gran Reserva 1981

Montecillo Gran Reserva Selección Especial 1981 Vintage

The huge snowfall that occurred in May 1981 caused a significant reduction in the volume of the vintage, but the later evolution of the growth cycle finally rewarded us with grapes of exceptional quality. A smaller vintage than that of 1982, but with very high quality.

Discover this 80% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo wine

Variety

80% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo

A vintage that was marked by a major snowstorm during the month of May, which affected a great deal of small shoots and buds in Riojan vineyards. Thanks to favorable weather conditions during summer and in the lead-up to harvest, the damage was minimized and the harvest was very good, with healthy grapes and excellent acidity.

Hand harvested and transported to the winery in small grape hods.

Elaboration

1

Alcoholic fermentation with long macerations in temperature-controlled (28ºC) stainless steel tanks, with more than a month's skin contact, 35 days.

2

This fantastic wine was then racked off into underground cement tanks, where it completed the process of malolactic fermentation.

Breeding

1

Aged for 42 months in medium-toast American (80%) and French (20%) oak barrels.

2

Once the wine reached the full expression of its oak aging, it was bottled to rest and evolve over at least 15 years before being released to market.

Color

Intense and bright with visible deposits, as is to be expected for its age, and the result of only having undergone very gentle stabilization before bottling. A cherry red color, with a tawny rim. Bright and limpid, translucent.

Smells

After decanting and oxygenation, aromas of fresh leather and eucalyptus appear, surrounded by clear notes of aniseed, cinnamon and black pepper. Voluptuous and resinous, where ever-present notes of candied fruits are underscored by aromas of high-quality toasted oak.

Taste

Intense and elegant, with silky tannins that are in perfect harmony with its natural acidity. With a lively, liquor-like finish.
