Montecillo 22 Barricas

At the end of the 19th Century, our founder, Celestino Navajas, made the first wines to bear our name in two handcrafted forged iron and oak vats. The smaller of the two vats gave rise to a wine that was aged in 22 oak barrels.
A tribute to our founders, their centuries-old legacy and winemaking philosophy, which has been studied with respect and adapted to the current day. A wine born from four parcels of vines, over 45 years old, as a blend of four varieties: Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo. 6,600 bottles of an astounding Gran Reserva, which is lively, intense and flavorful and goes beyond the limits of classicism.

Testimonials

Very dark fruits and larger toasted notes on top of fresh laurel, black peppercorn, clove, a light touch of cinnamon, and burnt toffee. Quite mighty on the palate with the tannins still quite upright and in a moment of development. Best drank in minimum two years still.

Elaboration

1

Each grape variety that goes into our Montecillo 22 Barricas wine is hand-harvested in small crates at the optimum moment of ripeness and transported to the winery where it is vatted separately at a low temperature in small tanks.

2

Bleeding-off of the must takes place in these tanks, with double maceration over 22 days, both before and after fermentation in contact with the skins.

3

After this, malolactic conversion takes place in underground concrete tanks.

Breeding

1

Each variety is aged for 32 months in new extra-fine grained French oak barrels from the Allier and Tronçais forests.

2

The best 22 barrels were selected for the final blend.

3

Aged in bottle for a minimum of 38 months to be rounded off in complete peace and total darkness.

Color

Astonishingly intense and vibrant. A Gran Reserva that retains a deep hue, with a remarkably intense cherry red rim.

Smells

It stands out for its great intensity and tremendously elegant variety of aromas and nuances. Notes of spices and minerals intertwine with aromas of noble oak and ripe or stewed fruit, with hints of blackberry, blueberry and plum, over a background of toasted and resinous notes.

Taste

Silky and bold, with a pleasant level of acidity and juicy, polished tannins. It has a long, very harmonious and pleasurable finish, in which the fruit and notes of oak reappear.
