Montecillo Limited Edition Wine

Our winemaker, Mercedes García Rupérez’s most personal and intuitive wine, a masterful interpretation and revival of more than 150 years of heritage. Two ancestral varieties – Tempranillo and Graciano – are blended together to offer the most modern Rioja wine from the third oldest winery in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Intense and opulent, with a great expression of fruit and exceptional balance. Pure elegance and daring.

Variety

70% Tempranillo and 30% Graciano.

A vintage which will be remembered in many parts of Europe for the frost that took place on April 28.

The harvest was marked by low production levels and very high-quality fruit with low berry weight thanks to the absence of pests and diseases throughout the entire growth cycle.

The wines have exceptionally high concentrations of tannins and a great capacity for aging.

Tempranillo: the vineyards are located on one of the highest hills in Fuenmayor (Los Blancos and Los Llanos). Over 40 years old, the vines are dry-farmed and bush trained, with predominately sandy soils with pebbles. Light levels are high due to the altitude, helped by fresh breezes in summer. These vineyards produce no more than 4,000 kg/ha. For the first time this vintage, a vineyard located in Badarán (Arijas) with a Tinta de Toro clone was selected to co-ferment with the grapes from the Fuenmayor vineyards.

Graciano: From the Tudelilla area of the Rioja Oriental. Exceptional ripening gave us grapes with extremely high levels of tannin and color, together with exquisite acidity.

Testimonials

Opulent dark fruit of cherry and dried boysenberry, steeped black tea leaf, toasted notes, light touch of cedar, burnt orange peel and caramel. Excellent width on the palate with fine tannins that are just starting to round out and present a truly exceptional wine with a lengthy finish and overall profile that’s still capable of aging many more years.

Breeding

1

Tempranillo: Aged for 20 months in medium-toast (80%) mixed and 20% French oak.

2

Graciano: Aged for 20 months in medium toast-plus mixed oak (80%) and French oak (20%) barrels.

3

After final blending, the wine was returned to the barrels for six months to better integrate the varieties as a harmonious blend.

4

After bottling, the wine rests in the bottle for at least two years before release.

Color

Intense and bright, cherry red with a blue rim.

Smells

High aromatic intensity even before swirling. After oxygenation, notes of ripe black fruit appear mixed with chocolate and vanilla.

Taste

On the palate it is powerful, with noble, silky tannins that fill the mouth. The black fruit reappears with hints of plum, toasted notes and an enjoyably sweet and long-lasting finish.
